What is the name given to the curve or bend in the river that is found in the middle course?
meander
A meander is a winding curve or bend in a river. They are typical of the middle and lower course of a river. This is because vertical erosion is replaced by a sideways form of erosion called LATERAL erosion, plus deposition within the floodplain.
What forms in the river on the outside of the bend?
Water moving faster has more energy to erode. This occurs on the outside of the bend and forms a river cliff. The river erodes the outside bends through corrasion, corrosion and hydraulic action. Water moves slowly on the inside of the bend and the river deposits some load, forming a river beach/slip-off slope.
What is it called when the river meets the sea?
An estuary is an area where a freshwater river or stream meets the ocean. When freshwater and seawater combine, the water becomes brackish, or slightly salty.
What feature of a meander is formed where the flow is fastest?
In the middle course the river has more energy and a high volume of water. The gradient here is gentle and lateral (sideways) erosion has widened the river channel. The river channel has also deepened. A larger river channel means there is less friction, so the water flows faster.
What causes river meandering?
Meanders are produced when water in the stream channel erodes the sediments of an outer bend of a streambank and deposits this and other sediment on subsequent inner bends downstream. Eventually, the meander may be cut off from the main channel, forming an oxbow lake.
What type of river is Oxbow Bend?
snake river
Oxbow Bend is a paved pullout along the snake river. Views can be seen from pullout. Oxbow Bend is an overlook along highway 89/191 between Jackson Lake Junction and Moran Junction. An oxbow is a crescent-shaped section of river lying alongside a flowing, winding river.
What is the formation of oxbow lake?
An oxbow lake starts out as a curve, or meander, in a river. A lake forms as the river finds a different, shorter, course. The meander becomes an oxbow lake along the side of the river. Oxbow lakes usually form in flat, low-lying plains close to where the river empties into another body of water.
What side of a river is deeper?
The deepest part of a river bed is called a channel. The channel is usually located in the middle of a river.
What is loop like the bend of a river?
A large loop like bend in a river is called a meander. It is produced by a stream or river swinging from side to side as it flows across its floodplain or shifts its channel within a valley.
What causes rivers to meander back and forth?
Rivers flowing over gently sloping ground begin to curve back and forth across the landscape. These are called meandering rivers. Meandering rivers erode sediment from the outer curve of each meander bend and deposit it on an inner curve further down stream. This causes individual meanders to grow larger and larger over time.
What are the two bends of a river called?
The point where the two bends intersect is called a meander cut-off. Static map. The low-lying area on either side of a river is called a floodplain. The floodplain is covered with water when the river overflows it banks during spring floods or periods of heavy rain.
What happens when a river overflows its banks?
The low-lying area on either side of a river is called a floodplain. The floodplain is covered with water when the river overflows it banks during spring floods or periods of heavy rain. Sediment is deposited on the floodplain each time the river floods.
How is sediment deposited when a river floods?
Static map. The low-lying area on either side of a river is called a floodplain. The floodplain is covered with water when the river overflows it banks during spring floods or periods of heavy rain. Sediment is deposited on the floodplain each time the river floods.
