What does a touch screen respond to?
Touch screens are electronic visual displays that allow a user to interact directly with what is displayed on the screen, rather than using a pointing device, such as a mouse. Touch screens are designed to respond to the touch of a finger, although an object — like a stylus — can also be used.
How do touch screens actually work?
Touchscreens work using electricity. The screen is made of glass, an insulating material – it cannot carry an electric current. The surface of the screen is therefore coated with a thin layer of an electrically conducting material such as indium tin oxide. This is chosen because it is transparent.

The reason some touchscreens only work with a bare finger lies in the human body’s naturally conductive properties. Capacitive touchscreens such as these rely on conductivity to detect touch commands. If you use a gloved finger or a stylus to control them, they won’t register or otherwise respond to your commands.

- Keep your hands and fingers moisturized.
- Another technique is to lick, or breath warm air from your breath onto your fingertip before using your touchscreen to help with the electrical conductivity.
- If you have particularly thick fingertips, try a different finger.
- Try using voice recognition.
