Does WHMIS apply to hazardous products that are being transported under the TDG Regulations?
WHMIS has aligned with the worldwide hazard communication system known as GHS – the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals. New hazard classes are included. Physical hazard criteria are consistent with the Transport of Dangerous Goods (TDG regulations).
Are WHMIS and TDG interchangeable?
WHMIS is not the same as TDG The federal Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Act is not the same as WHMIS legislation.

The federal TDG Regulations apply to everyone. The regulations even apply when a member of the public transports dangerous goods such as gasoline, oxygen, and propane for personal use. However, certain exemptions exist for small quantities or for specific situations.
How long is TDG valid for?

A training certificate expires 36 months (3 years) after its date of issuance for transport by road vehicle, railway vehicle or vessel, and 24 months (2 years) after its date of issuance for transport by aircraft.
How long is WHMIS valid for?

Do consumer products fall under WHMIS?
In Canada, any controlled product that’s packaged as a consumer product and in quantities normally used by the public is generally exempt from WHMIS 2015 supplier label and SDS requirements. Available for sale to the general public through retail outlets.
Is TDG certificate transferable?
Training certificates are NOT transferable. When an employee has received training, the employer must issue a certificate. An individual who works for more than one employer at a time will receive more than one certificate.
Can you fail WHMIS?
If you don’t pass the first time, you will have a maximum of two more attempts. Each time you take the exam, you will get a different set of randomly generated questions. Once you pass the exam – or fail three times – you will no longer have access to the exam.
Does TDG expire?
Yes it does. The expiration date differs for different modes of transport. The certificate is valid for: 24 months (2 years) after its date of issuance for transport by aircraft.

This exemption is found in subsection 5.6 of the HPR. When do you have to comply with TDG regulations?
If you are the manufacturer and if your product meets the definition for a dangerous good (and if the dangerous good is not exempt under the TDG Regulations), then the product is regulated under the TDG Regulations. In this case, you must comply with the TDG legislation.
What do you need to know about WHMIS regulations?
Workers need to be trained on the hazards of each product they are using including the safe use, storage and disposal of that product. WHMIS Regulations lay out the requirements for suppliers and importers of hazardous products used in Canada.
