Before his encounter with witches, Macbeth seems to have been a heroic soldier and loyal to the king. Ultimately, it would seem that without the intervention of the witches and also Lady Macbeth, Macbeth would never have taken the steps necessary in order to become king himself.

They are working hard to stir up trouble and that trouble is influencing MacBeth to become king because it will cause chaos in the future.
